Morning & Evening…
I am a slow riser. I value time to linger, to sip my tea, to listen to the awakening world outside the front door. The other morning, they reported twin fawns were found playing in the mud puddle that forms in the low part of our long driveway. The hummingbirds buzz by intent on a sip of nectar, and the startling rays of sunlight illuminate the haze left over from the night before.

Our list…
Things fall off the list. It’s funny to me, I don’t even remember what they were. Suddenly, in the face of a dire diagnosis, things shift and change. As life moves forward, things that once seemed dire are seen in a new light.

She loves him…
Once, when he and his sister were on a school trip to Boston, he sold Allie’s lunch and juice boxes for spending money. The vice principal at the middle school had us on speed dial. There were days of real worry about this one, but I knew that under that tough kid I struggled with, was a tender boy’s heart.

The middle…
Today, I am in the middle of lots of things. Relationships, career transitions, and ongoing work areas are all in progress, are all under way. It is good for me to remember that the middle is a good part too. It’s hard and dim, but here is where we decide who we want to be.

Oh baby…
He came into the world in a rush, after months of waiting and preparation. Although I have given birth three times, this was the first time I watched a little one take his first breath. Tears ran down my cheeks as we waited for the first sounds of life. His first cry brought a rush of relief. They were both fine. Beautiful. Radiant. Healthy. Raising adults…
My children have challenged everything I know or care about. They have worn us to the very bone, and they have pushed us beyond the edge. These cherub-faced wonders did not really rebel in high school when I was prepared for it, but as they transitioned into adulthood they brought us to our knees.
