Summer 2017…

Summer 2017 is now history. This has been a summer I will never forget. After almost a decade of work in a community college, I was released from the grind of the enrollment cycle which had ground the joy of summer from me. For years, instead of savoring the best days of summer, I was rushing to fill the fall class. My days were drawn between the needs of the staff and the needs of the students with very little left at the end of the day. I could not have imagined adding anything to those grueling days. Learning to play…

A few years ago, in the midst of a crushing time at work, a colleague said she was learning that the antidote to stress and fatigue was not just rest, but fun. She said she was scheduling lots of fun into her time off. She found that she was more able to handle the complexity and stress at work after having spent her time playing. Finishing well…

Yesterday, I finished a 5k. It’s on my list. I’ve never been a runner, barely a long walker. But, I do love to be outside, I enjoy the sounds and sights of summer in New England. How hard could it be?  My kids convinced me that this would be the place, to take on the challenge. So, I convinced my mom to go along, and we pinned on our tags near the starting line. April road trip…

April in New England can be fickle. About ten days ago, I slid to the edge of the road as I took a turn on ice covered roads on my way to work. Yesterday, I spent the day with the windows down and the sunroof open as I drove toward Western Mass in the golden glow of the April sun. Trees are preparing to burst, but for now, the green canopy of summer is still weeks away. Through fields and quaint towns, I wandered a hundred miles on winding roads. Stone walls, white steeples, and green town commons welcomed me as I drove through town after town. Continue reading “April road trip…”

The arcade…

On the navy base at Mayport Florida where I spent my teen years, there were lots of things to do. We had a Community Center with programming for the base kids, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a beautiful beach, a gym with Saturday night roller skating, but it was the Bowling Ally that captured our hearts. Here we ate hot cheesy nachos, bought $1 boxes of Marlboro reds from the machine in the hallway, and learned to play pool. Continue reading “The arcade…”

Visit New Orleans

Years ago, we made a bucket list of places we wanted to visit. Near the top was New Orleans. This is a place that seems otherworldly to me. How many books, movies, TV shows have revealed the beauty (and strangeness) of this place? From the Rescuers, to Interview with a Vampire, to NCIS, to Mark Twain this landscape and the beauty of this city has captured my imagination. Continue reading “Visit New Orleans”

Paint night…

So, the first of my 50 before 50 list is in the books. Friends gathered at the local paint shop and found ourselves right back in 4th-grade art class, only this time with wine. There were ten of us, on a very cold January night. Surrounded by vivid color, we headed toward the blank canvas. It felt like I remember art class feeling, awkward. My brain knew what it should look like, but my hand did not know how to produce the desired effect. Somewhat like writing with my left hand. Continue reading “Paint night…”

50 things…

So, this year (2016) my sweetheart turns 50. Seriously, 50? He’s um, getting older, and I am right behind him. We are moving quickly into a new season of life. I am excited to see what new adventures lie ahead. Instead of mourning what is behind, I want to launch toward the future. To do some things I’ve never done before and head towards 50 with exuberance, rather than let it creep up on me unaware. So, I’ve created a 50 before I’m 50 list…  Continue reading “50 things…”
