Glimpse of Glory

The Words of Life (part two)

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Every thing is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. Hebrews 4:12-13
All words are powerful, they can wound and cut at the very heart of who we are. Words have the power to connect us or divide us, to lift us up or tear us down. The written word can carry new ideas across time and space, shaping and reshaping the human experience. But, the Word of God is alive and powerful. Alive here, in the original language is zoe means life force and the word powerful is the Greek word energeo, together they describe a living energy. The Word of God is living and powerful beyond just the words on the page, but the energy behind them. This makes sense, if you think about creation… Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light (Gen. 1:1). The Word of God has creative power, to create from nothing, to shape and reshape the human heart and experience.
Often as I face challenges, I will read the Word to my own heart, asking the Father to make His truth real in my life. As I approach the Word I pray expecting that this powerful Word will shape and recreate my heart and mind. When have you been touched by this living and active Word in your life lately? How have your motives been revealed leaving nothing hidden? When my heart is cold toward the Word and the sentences lay flat along the page, it is time to consider my relationship to the Words of Life. The Word of God is His message to my life and it comes with life giving power to affect change both in and through my heart. Am I reading it as a powerful life giving message… am I reading it at all? Or do I have a “been there, done that” attitude toward His Word. Skimming over the familiar passages rather than reading and re-reading them and savoring them for their wonder. Take a moment to simply stop and pray about your current relationship to this miraculous Word… and by extension to His own Heart.
